This is one of my favorite pieces hung in my living room. Lance does amazing work.
"Forest Traders" written by Lance Smith (Cherokee)
This is a painting about the Little People. Anidawi (Cherokee), čanotila (Lakota) for Little People, and on the right, of course, are the Gnomes (European Little People). Gunther, (in the purple jacket) the leader of the Gnomes, has led his group to the annual meeting spot. He proudly shows the beaded bag he bartered for last year. He proudly uses it everyday. Little Bird, who is the leader of the Little People, greets him with a smile, as he does every year.
The Gnomes have come from the underground, their home. They brought with them gems, stones, crystals, roots and herbs for trading which they have dug and harvested. They also brought their own craft items which they are eager to trade. Little Bird and his group have made their way from their forest home through a tunnel under the brush and thicket.
They, too, are eager to trade their goods, medicine, berries, dried fruit, arrowheads and other tools they have made. The annual rendezvous of the humans is also underway, seen in the background where they are setting up their camp. Tribes would come from many miles and bring their goods for trading, as well as mountain men. The Little People have also taken this opportunity to meet, exchange stories and enjoy each other's diversity and company.
