  • Some of the Norse/Saxon history podcasts im enjoying at the moment. Anglo-Saxon England podcast - is a at times whimsical narrative journey through the history of Anglo-Saxon England, easy to listen too and not academically 'stodgy'. Next: Exploring the Viking Age - is an enjoyable 'fireside chat' with a guest of the month. It is also on Youtube but works better as an audible podcast imo.
Next: Will I Vike it - a cosy chat with various re-enactors. Works better on a visual level, and ideal for a wet Sunday afternoon. Finally: Saga Thing - introduction, synopsis and exploration of all of the Icelandic sagas - good for swatting up on the intricacies of the saga meanings.

  • Episode #1 - Welcome to The Viking Age

The story of the Viking Age is one of a collision of cultures. It is the story of what happened when Pagan Scandinavians, heirs to a long history of Germanic cultural tradition, expanded from their homes to interact with the Christianized peoples of Western Europe.

  • For a time I had managed to steer clear of the whole DNA testing thing feeling quite comfortable to think of myself as just another "American mutt". I had always heard through family that we were this or that but without either parent having a strong tie to any real heritage I had really never made any effort to. Granted, my college education in the arts took me through history and antiquities of many cultures with none necessarily "jumping out" as my own. It might possibly be due to age. Although, if I had to really guess it's probably got more to do with the energy of the planet and what we're collectively experiencing as a species.
Either way, I began to get curious as I have experienced deeper resonances with cultures, practices, and thought than ever before. That curiosity led me to go through the process of getting and submitting a sample. Then the waiting began and my curiosity grew as did a growing sense of expectations. What was it that Tanta told me as a kid? Who mentioned Russia? Or was it Dutch?
After what seemed like forever, I finally received an email that I could check my results. I remember the feeling, I felt like a kid on Christmas. I opened up my profile, clicked on my results and "waah-waah" (sad trombone) lo and behold I'm 58% English and 42% German. Pretty much as Anglo-Saxon as they come and for some reason I feel let down. Now granted I know this has no bearing whatsoever on me as "me". I mean, I'm still the same lovable, happy, freewheeling and friendly guy regardless of some test. But I still felt a bit cheated...
Until I happened to be listening to a podcast about runes and found "The Viking Test". I submitted my test results and waited. I honestly expected it to have the same underwhelming result as the last test. BUT (yes a big but!) I was surprised to find out that my Viking index score is 65% which is pretty darn high. My highest match is (4 of 5) is Scandinavian Viking with British Viking as close second (3 of 5). There's a small amount of Slavic and Finish Viking as well. Needless to say, I am pretty excited and curious to learn more.
If you already have DNA results and you'd like to try it yourself you can find "The Viking Test" here: https://genomelink.io/referral/J3M8t9tLwb/
I am curious to see your results, so please share if you do.
