Remembering my late father.

My mother sat next to him for ten days and nights, while he was in hospice. My brother and I were with my mother on my father's final day and we all watched him pass away.

Songs like this are the only real emotional help available in these times, I feel.

My father always instilled in me the Japanese saying that Buddhism, in Japan, is a philosophy and not a religion. Shinto is what he considered to be the "belief system" of Japan.

I believe the separation between Christian belief and Buddhist belief is what many Japanese wish to convey when they insist that Buddhism is a philosophy. Many will further insist that Buddhism isn't even a philosophy. Again, I believe this is because many wish to keep clear the separation between Christian faith and Buddhist history.

As a United States citizen, I am glad that I am one of the few (many?) that still holds our history close. I am proud that my family's lines has made it this far, into the "New World". Melancholy tales that not many want to remember or respect.
