• Five Years Ago – A Tribute

On April 12, 2020, Mattjö’s father passed on to join his ancestors. Just a few months later, on October 13, his birthday, we released the track "Fjörbann (Life-Ban)".

This song evokes the imagined voices of Viking women, waiting for their husbands to return from distant expeditions — a poetic allegory for life’s journey and the uncertainty of its end.

Mattjö chose to write the lyrics in English rather than Old Norse, so that everyone could understand them immediately. Using kenningar (Norse poetic metaphors), he crafted this piece as a tribute to his father — a warrior and a poet.

Here's the decoded text, written in collaboration with Jules Piet:

    Lyrics – "Fjörbann"

I wish I could ask you to stay
You always rose the steed of the bay ( ship)
They long ago crafted your fate
May the Norns change what’s engraved
Are you sleeping in the plain of Aegir? ( the ocean floor)
Or feasting in the hall with the Æsir? ( Valhalla)
It seems that after the last sword song ( battle)
You had a final ride to where you belong
Every night I look to the track of the moon ( sky)
The swan of blood sings we won’t meet that soon ( raven/crow)
The weeping of the clouds drowns the rock of fear ( heart)
The mead of the son of Bur will be poured for heroes here ( Odin’s poetic mead)
To all those who have lost, who wait, who remember — this song is for you.
